"Be still and know that I am God."
Psalm 46:10
What a beautiful invitation.
At first glance, it sounds like a moment that we all long for.
A breath of rest. A pause from the noise.
A break in the relentless rhythm of life.
But what happens when stillness doesn't feel possible?
When life presses in so tightly that silence feels like a luxury we can't afford?
When your days are stitched together by the needs of others... a constant swirl of motion and emotion.
The noise, demands and decisions that press in on your heart can feel anything but still.
When I read all 11 verses of Psalm 46, I see a people who are in a very similar state of mind. There is mention of cosmic collapse and political turmoil but in the midst of it, there is the presence and power of God.
God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though the waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with it's swelling...
Psalm 46:1-3
It goes on to to tell us in verse 4 that "there is a river whose streams make glad the City of God"
And in verse 5 we find a promise that "God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn".
I have seen many women claim this verse as a specific promise for themselves
and if that is you I have some bad news, and some good news.
The bad news first... This verse is not about you. When read in context, the "her" that is referenced is the "City of God". Zion, Jerusalem. It is a reiteration of the hundreds of promises that God made to his Chosen People, promises that he would preserve them, even in the midst of wars, famine & desolation. He would never abandon them and at the right time, He would send a deliverer.
And that is the good news! Because the deliverer that He sent was Jesus and the salvation that he offers is extended to you! We have been grafted in to the tree. We have been invited to dwell in the "City Of God" and so the promise that He "is in the midst of her" holds true for us. God will be our help in times of trouble.

In our own troubled seasons, God offers a stillness that isn't found the the absence of chaos, but in the presence of knowing who He is. Knowing His character is steady and His goodness is not shaken by circumstances. Knowing His promises are not just theory but a firm anchor, unchanging and true. Knowing that His purpose will stand, both in the grand story of the world and in the small corner of life where you feel like everything might fall apart.
This kind of stillness is not about quiet surroundings,
it is about a quiet soul.
Stillness is born from surrender, from releasing our grip and resting in His.
It grows as we trust His heart, even when we do not understand his plan.
Be still, not because life is calm, but because God is God.
And when we lean into that knowing, our souls can exhale...
and stillness finds us there.
