Beauty In The Real

A few years ago, Jonah, who is 24 and Autistic, decided that he couldn’t abide setting foot into a single store. The reasons were complicated but we honored his requests and jumped through lots of hoops to meet his needs as well as the needs of the home and family.

But lately his stance has softened a bit and we have tried a couple of thrift stores, just to get our feet wet. So far it’s a win and it’s fun to let him pick out the things he likes! It’s also great that they don’t cost too much because chances are he won’t actually keep any of it for long!

Caregiving can be beautiful and painful all at the same time. Whether it is your job, your family obligation or your joy, it can all be your ministry when it’s done “as unto the LORD”.

Here are a few perspectives that have helped me to hold on to faith through that hard seasons of my own caregiving journey. I pray that they will encourage you as well.

In two days, I will enter my decaf era. Please say a prayer for me during this bold and slightly questionable life decision.

After connecting a few dots between my sleep score, stress levels, and my deep emotional reliance on caffeine, I’m attempting something radical. Like getting in touch with actual reality again.

I have pre-scheduled sick days for this weekend because I fully expect to be battling a withdrawal headache and the kind of sleepiness usually reserved for infants and the elderly.

Taking a moment to say goodbye to Diet Coke, which has become a loyal companion, a personality trait, and quite possibly a spiritual gift.

Shout out to my husband who has bravely volunteered as my emotional support human, primary caregiver to Jonah, and official witness to whatever version of me emerges from this caffeine detox.

I have a feeling this might involve:
• Feeling my feelings without a latte buffer
• Discovering my patience level may have been artificially enhanced
• Letting God carry what I’ve been trying to out-caffeinate

We’ll call it an experiment in sleep, stress, and surrender. Hoping on the other side of this I find real rest for my heart, mind, soul, and body.

If I start speaking more slowly, blinking thoughtfully, or staring into the distance like I just uncovered a life truth, just know I’m either detoxing or actually discovering a life truth 😜

I should be back to some version of normal once my body recalibrates. Until then, expect plot twists, dramatic yawns, and an occasional identity crisis in the kitchen.

It’s Good Friday.

For those who follow Jesus, it’s a day to pause and reflect on the message of the Cross, though, for many of us, that message is never far from our minds.

If you look at the Christians in your life and think their belief sounds foolish, you’re not alone. Many of us have thought the same at one time or another.

But that was before.

Before we understood how
lost we really were.

Before we experienced the depth of God’s grace and mercy poured
out on us.

Before we received the gift of faith and encountered the living presence of God dwelling within us.

The message of the Cross doesn’t promise to fix every circumstance.
But it gives a hope that reaches beyond them.

It is this hope that sustains me.
And it is this hope I pray you come to know.

In an effort to be more “fun” in our little corner of Instagram, I started brainstorming some lighter content. Things like creative cooking, happy activities, lifestyle tips, and the ever popular OOTD. (Outfit of the day, for anyone wondering what in the world that means.)

As I got dressed this morning, I had to laugh at the idea of posting what I’m wearing because here are a few honest facts:

1.This entire outfit is thrifted.

2. The top is from Madewell. I think it’s cute and comfortable, even if it’s not exactly my best color.

3. At the first hot flash, this OOTD will be reevaluated and likely downgraded to a tank top. The urgency in those moments is unmatched and layers must cooperate.

4. I am 56. Is that too old for ripped jeans? I’m going with no, because “ventilation” 😜 See, # 3

5. Jonah’s OOTD is the same one you’ll see him in for months. I just rotate it through a very discreet overnight wash.

6. When he’s done with it, he will rip it up and throw it away like it personally offended him.

7. Spring is a little stressful because one warm day means he switches to shorts and will not go back to pants until fall, no matter how unpredictable Minnesota decides to be.

8. It’s unlikely many people will actually see my OOTD in real life, but I feel better and get more done when I’m dressed, so it’s become a habit.

9. I already had my first hot flash while typing this. In an effort to keep the shirt on a little longer, I stepped outside where the “feels like temperature” is 25 degrees. Problem temporarily solved.

10. Most important part of any OOTD: “Above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 3:14

As a full time caregiver for someone who needs me, loving him is the easiest part. Carrying the reality of our day to day life can be the hardest. Still, I trust that God is present in every part of it… the beauty and the breaking. If you understand this tension, this space is for you.

Lots of you say how great it is that he keeps me young.

I understand the sentiment… but that’s not exactly how it works.The truth? I’m not chasing him around.
He’s chasing me.
He won’t move unless I do. And it’s essential, for his physical and mental health, that he keeps moving. So I move. And in the process, I get a pretty great two-for-one deal.

Here’s my gentle encouragement for you today:
Whatever your caregiving situation looks like, modeling movement for the people around you will make a difference. Maybe not today.
Maybe not tomorrow.
But it will.

So don’t sit on the bench and watch them play. Get up and move.It won’t be wasted.

I get to be his mom, his activity partner and his best friend. And today was a good day for all three.

We tried out Sky Zone again after he “canceled” it a few years ago. He used to love it and I was hoping he would again. He Did and I am so thankful for an activity that is also exercise… for both of us!!!

I was recently asked if Jonah is possessive or controlling of me —
and if I could share how we handle that.

Short answer?
Yes.

Long answer? Also yes… but with context.

It’s not something I’ve really wanted to unpack in a public space. Because the judgment (and the ahem “expert advice”) that would flood my DMs would not be fun — for me or for the other moms quietly navigating similar dynamics with their kids.

So let’s just say this: I am Jonah’s greatest regulating factor. His nervous system finds safety in me. And over time, that safety has turned into a level of dependence that isn’t really healthy for either of us.

Is it possessiveness? Sometimes.
Does it look controlling from the outside? It can.
Is it actually anxiety and dysregulation in a 23-year-old autistic man whose brain still defaults to “Mom = safe”? Yes.

This isn’t about a toddler clinging to my leg in Target.
This is about an adult son whose nervous system hasn’t caught up with his age.

Acknowledging it is one thing. Untangling it is another.

We’re working on it — slowly. Stretching tolerance in inches, not miles. Practicing space in small, sustainable ways. Building regulation tools that don’t have my name attached to them.

And in the meantime?

I remind myself that my goal isn’t to make him independent overnight. It’s to help him build safety that lives inside his own body.

If you’re walking this road with an autistic child,teen or adult — if you feel like the “safe person” role is both an honor and a crushing weight — you are not alone.

We have to learn to hold boundaries and compassion at the same time.
We try to reduce dependence without withdrawing love.
And we can trust that slow growth is still growth — even at 23.

One inch at a time. 💛

No new systems.
No big wins.
No “this changed everything for us” update.

It’s just been the same cycle on repeat.

Same needs.
Same struggles.
Same conversations.
Same prayers that feel unanswered and have me questioning if I am even praying the right things.

Life in a hard season can feel a lot like Groundhog Day — wake up, do the exact same exhausting stuff, go to bed, and do it again tomorrow.

And sometimes… This kind of season can mess with your faith.

Not in a dramatic, crisis-of-belief way.
But in a slow, worn-down way.

Where you still believe God is good…
but you’re also tired of asking for strength.
Tired of waiting for change.
Tired of feeling stuck while everyone else seems to be moving forward.

Some days faith looks less like confidence and more like just… not quitting.

Getting up.
Doing what needs to be done.
Choosing to trust God again even though nothing looks different than it did yesterday.

Choosing to worship God in the hard places.

So if you’re in a season where it feels like you’re living the same day over and over — whether that’s caregiving, grief, burnout, health stuff, parenting, work stress, whatever —

You’re not broken because you’re struggling to stay hopeful.

Jonah and Officer John ended the afternoon by exchanging Bible verses. Of course Jonah had to have the last word but John shared with us how he keeps this verse from Isaiah 6 in his heart and mind every time he goes out on a call. “Here I am Lord, send me” and then he goes, to the lost, the broken and the hurting. We can all use that reminder in whatever God is calling us to do today.

When God wants to remind you that he’s paying attention, sometimes he does it with a police truck on the beach!

Jonah first met Officer John in October of 2024 while we were in Myrtle Beach, SC, filming Traveling On The Spectrum Season 2. The production crew arranged a beach visit with an officer who was incredibly kind and so in tune with Jonah. They hit it off immediately. Jonah even got to ride in the truck and make announcements over the bullhorn—much to everyone’s delight.

When we planned another trip to Myrtle Beach 16 months later, Jonah asked if he could see Officer John again. We didn’t have his contact information, so we quietly let the idea go.

But God had another plan.

Yesterday, as we were turning into our hotel after a walk on the beach, I spotted a Beach Patrol truck in the distance and suggested we wait and wave to the officer on duty. I thought it might help check the box in Jonah’s mind—and I always love when he gets to interact with officers in positive settings.

As the truck slowed and the window rolled down, we were stunned to discover it was Officer John. He remembered Jonah from the filming, and we were all in awe of how perfectly God orchestrated the timing.

Jonah got to ride in the truck again, and Officer John even invited us to the station for a tour. It has been the highlight of our trip—not only because of how much joy it brought Jonah, but because it was a sweet reminder that God is always working behind the scenes for our good. And sometimes, He lets us catch a glimpse of the blessings He’s been arranging all along.
